Members were encouraged to bring along souvenirs and memories of this momentous day in 1945. These were arranged on a table covered with a poppy-patterned cloth and included framed medals (from both world wars); a cartoon of a quartermaster handing out ragged bits of army uniform (by a war artist of the time); ration books; a letter from the King (sent to all schoolchildren); a souvenir mug, and ‘call-up’ letters.
During the afternoon an appropriately themed tea was served, and the Wartime Memorabilia examined with interest: encouraging much discussion. Personal memories ranged from air-raid shelters to powdered eggs. The event was a very enjoyable trip down Memory Lane.’
