CWL Services assisting Veteran Service Personnel – A Social event!!

Services Committee Short Report on resident’s involvement and activities.

On Tuesday the 12th of December 2017, three of our residents; Mark Arnold, Colin Withey and Michael Aitcheson were privileged to attend the official premier of the latest Star Wars Movie “The last Jedi” at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The tickets for this movie was provided by the Endeavour Fund who support our free gym membership and the premier was in support of The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

Funding for travel was sourced from the Services Branch of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) and as this was a black tie event, the three residents needed to be fully suited and booted. As such, part of the funding from the CWL was used to purchase these suites for the residents. The amount donated by the CWL was £300.00 who previous supported us with £1000.00 to fund our residents to get onto courses.

Find below the reaction from our three residents on how they felt about the whole event:

Mark Arnold

“I have been with Alabare since May 2017 and since being here I have found self-worth and a better way of life and it’s all down to what Alabare has offered me, for example, I have been offered a painting and decorating course which should be starting in early spring of 2018 and last night I was privileged to be invited to see the European premier of the new star wars film where HRH Prince William and Harry were in attendance at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It was a black tie, red carpet event which was the most humbling experience I have ever had in my life. I cannot express my gratitude enough to the charity that provided me with the brand new suite I was granted and the travel all round. An all-round experience I will never forget and live with for the rest of my life. Thank you to everyone who made this possible”.

Colin Withey

“Hi, I am Colin and last night I had a once in a lifetime experience. On behalf of Alabare, I represented the Gloucestershire Home for Veterans at the premier of the last Jedi at the Royal Albert Hall. I felt honoured and privileged beyond words to be about 30 feet away from the Princes and cast of the film. It was so uplifting and has sparred me onto doing more extraordinary things in my life. I will let other veterans know and encourage them to try other activities associated with Alabare and the Royal British Legion, as you feel uplifted in many of the activities you kindly put on throughout the year. I thank you from the bottom of my heart and I passed photos of the event to friends and family who are jealous of me and wished me well at the same time”.

Michael Aitcheson

“What an amazing event. I never ever dreamt of attending such an event in my lifetime or getting close to the Royal family, not alone two royalties and the atmosphere was ecstatic and unbelievable. I will never forget this in my life and all thanks goes to Alabare, the CWL and the Endeavour Fund for making such an impact in my life. Attending this lifted me from a no body to a somebody, which has given me a sense of self-worth and my confidence level is now skyrocketing to which I feel like being on top of the world. A couple of weeks ago, I was homeless in Bristol and it is beyond believe that I am here with all these goodies happening around me. I never believed there were good people in this world but Alabare has shown that “Santa” is indeed true and very real. Thank you to all you wonderful organisations for doing what you do”.
